vestiges series (paintings & drawings)

The Vestiges Paintings envision a world in which icebergs and glaciers no longer exist. These “paintings from the future” may be seen as mythologizing the natural world as it once existed. I often think of my work as cave paintings, recording a world now lost, coupled with images of the world humans have created. The layering and repetition of symbols: tree stumps and icebergs (nature under threat), horns (protection), eyes (the observer/watcher) and circles (biology and the microscopic world) all serve to create an alternative visual language. This visual language is all part of the reordering of the world as a means of grasping the uncertainty that lies ahead.

black paintings

The black paintings are inspired by the “unreal” new life forms discovered in deep sea trenches. These previously unknown life forms exist in permanent darkness.  With only 5% of the sea floor mapped, the black paintings seek to combine real and imagined ecosystems that may exist yet are still undiscovered.

photographs on glass

This series was made with black and white negatives from the 1990s, which have been developed onto sheets of glass using liquid photographic emulsion. The resulting images are blurry, creating a soft, dissolving world, echoed by the fragility of the glass. The blackened and brown shapes are born out of the unpredictability of the chemical emulsion, giving the works the feel of a found object worn down over time. The images, once sharp and defined, now dissolve into abstract forms, allowing them to function as a meditation on memory, time, and the slow disappearance of both.
